50 Billion by 2035
The 50 by 35 Initiative is an ambitious plan to unlock investments of $50 billion by 2035
in collaboration with partners building a world-class, future-ready global African workforce.
The 50 by 35 initiative will aggregate, amplify, and connect commitments from stakeholders, building a human capital superhighway to link Africa’s talent with world-class opportunities and jobs. The impact of 50 by 30 will be placing 2 million young Africans at the top of the human capital pyramid and changing the role of Africa in the global labor market by shifting the continent from being seen exclusively as the source of cheap, entry-level labor to a powerhouse of innovation, creativity, and economic dynamism for the world.
Specifically, the 50 by 35 Initiative is a call to development partners, corporations, philanthropy, and investors across all sectors to create specific, measurable, and actionable goals of their contribution to workforce development and change access to the global labor market for young Africa. In particular, it calls on banks, asset managers, and others in the financial services industry to provide products that facilitate connecting African youth to the skills needed for jobs and global opportunity and connects them with risk mitigation models and shovel-ready implementation partners. It calls on African governments to require a global workforce dimension to development and investment efforts, similar to the way they require environmental impact assessments. Other examples of commitments include:
● Financing
● Scholarships and fellowships
● Mentorship
● Industry-specific micro-credentials
● Change from short-term to long-term capacity-building approaches
● Other measurable research, advocacy, media, and visibility to the agenda of 50 by 35.
We believe Africa’s success is the world’s success. As the world’s youngest and fastest growing continent, Africa is positioned to lead in critical areas—from technology and innovation to green energy and sustainable development. Together, we are accelerating this journey, and we invite partners who share our vision to join us in building this future-ready workforce for Africa and the world.
